Medical Social Worker

There are few people in this world who find great joy in helping others. For them, service to humanity really matters and is important. One such group of people is the medical social workers. Though they are highly trained with a college degree and earn money for their services, only those who have great interpersonal skills will be able to excel in this field.

Medical social workers do a variety of work but they are usually present in hospitals. They provide psychological care to a large number of patients including children, abandoned people, drug abusers etc. In the hospitals, one of their main duties is to help the patient to get discharged. Though a specific patient may be deemed ready to be discharged by the doctor who attended on them, the social worker needs to act as the medium between the doctor, the patient and the people to whom the patient will be handed over after he/she is discharged.

If the social worker finds that the patient is not suitable to be discharged or he would again be rendered homeless or be introduced into an unsuitable environment after discharge, then the medical social worker can then report that the patient should not be discharged. As these tasks have a huge impact on the costs to the hospital and also on the psychology of the patients, it is required that they be skilled in a variety of departments and also be kind, organized,  strong-willed, sociable and charming among other qualities.

There are different types of social workers, each requiring different skills and different levels of knowledge. So medical social workers form that part of social workers who deal with giving psychological support to children, people or families who have terminal illnesses and also do not have anyone to act as care-givers. It may also involve working with elderly people to ensure that are properly taken care of and their needs are understood and met by people around them. As can be seen, this kind of work requires a lot of patience and dedication.

Medical social workers are expected to have completed a degree and some specialized jobs also require them to have completed a master’s degree in the field that they want to specialize. After this master’s degree, some period has to be spent on internship so that the practical skills are acquired and sharpened. This is usually done in hospitals and clinics and it is considered valuable not only for the valuable practical training that it gives but also that it helps to obtain the license that is required for them to work. Once the internship is completed and the social worker is licensed or registered, he/she can then apply to jobs in non-profit organizations, hospitals etc.

They  work under very tight deadlines and are usually under extreme pressure due to the large number of patients and also due to the timelines that are involved. So, it does require a high level of passion to serve people and this is what makes these social workers to undertake such jobs.
