Many States Require A Specific Education

In order to have a great social worker career, many states require their social workers to have a graduate degree in social work or an applicable field. Some states actually require a Masters in Social Work, or MSW, degree in order for you to work as a social worker. That doesn't mean that you can't help out social workers if you don't have the degree in a number of areas, such as administrative support, but to become an actual certified social worker, you are going to have to step and invest in your education.

States Also Require Licensing

In order to have a great social worker career, you not only need to have the education at a graduate level, but you also need to have specific certification. There are national tests which can license you as a social worker if you are interested and have the transcripts to prove you have the degree.

Social Work Doesn't Always Involve Social Work

If you are looking for a great social worker career and the education just isn't for you, you can become a social worker in a different field, such as assisting individuals with developmental disabilities or the elderly and those who cannot adequately care for themselves 100%. Many of these positions require only a bachelor's degree or even just relevant certifications or experience for you to be employed. You may not be fulfilling the traditional role of a social worker career, but you would be helping others in the best way you can.

Volunteer To Gain Experience For A Great Social Worker Career

If education and experience aren't in your favor when considering a social worker career, then consider volunteering your time at a local homeless shelter, a local religious organization with community outreach programs, your local YMCA, or other agencies that help other people. Be prepared to face challenges you would never expect as you help individuals that are angry, ill, mentally ill, and possibly face some serious health challenges. One thing is for certain - if you can successfully work a volunteer position like one of these, then you are taking the first step toward a successful social worker career.
